Glowr Chair
“Singing is in my people as sight is in my eye”
This phrase hit me hard, I had hiraeth, a sort of longing for my homeland, the land of song.
My childhood was punctuated by images of the minors strike, the biggest social upheaveal in the Thatcher years where 250,000 minors went on strike in solidarity to try and stop the closure of the coal pits. They survived on no wages for a year and soup kitchens popped up to feed their starving families. The Welsh minors sang, to keep spirits up and to keep hunger at bay. I remember the stackable, utilitarian chairs, honest and robust, where people would open their hearts and sing. The Glowr chair is my tribute to them. Black for the coal and bracken coloured for the landscape, tweed for the caps. t
Glowr...means miner in Welsh.
The Glowr chair was chosen by Massimo Dutti and AD Magazine to represent Spain in the Milan Design Fair, but thats another story….
